MindThump is a simple and addictive game of mental agility.
MindThump is US$15 shareware and with your payment you will receive an electronic copy of “Inside MindThump” detailing how the game works and tips for improving your play.
The game consists of a board of 12 symbols chosen from a set of 81. Each symbol has four characteristics:
• Colour (red, purple, blue)
• Shape (star, circle, square)
• Shading (solid, shaded. hollow)
• Count (single, double, triple)
Your task is simply to pick sets of 3 symbols where each characteristic (independently) must be either all the same or all different.
This is the crux of the game, so I will repeat this - each characteristic (eg colour) must be either all the same (eg red, red, red) or all different (red, purple, blue), but not two the same and one different (eg red, red, blue). To make a set, three symbols must match (all the same or all different) for all four characteristics.
Here are some examples:
This is a set - all different colours, same shape, same shading, same count.
This is a set - all different colours, shapes, shadings, and counts.
This is a set - same colour, same shape, all different shadings, all different counts.
This is not a set! Although the shape, shading and counts are all different, there are two of the same colour, so the colour characteristic fails, and since all four characteristics must match these three symbols do not form a set.
Why are you still reading? You could be playing by now!
Modes of Play
The game offers three modes:
Practice - This is a good place to start, it shows you a board of 12 symbols and lets you choose sets (click three symbols). If you still don’t know what a set is, click the Hint button and MindThump will show you a set. You can also set the difficulty level from 1 to 100 (1 is very easy, 100 will gradually get very hard).
Solo Run - You start off with sixty seconds, and you get a bonus ten seconds for each correct set you select. Keep choosing sets until you run out - the objective is to get as many sets as you can before your time runs out. There is always a set on the board, although they get harder to find as you go along.
Time Trial - This is for experts. You must choose sets until there are no sets on the board, then click the “Board is Impossible” button - but beware, there is no penalty for clicking an incorrect set, but you must be certain the board is impossible before clicking the button, if it isn’t you lose! When you click the button, the board is redealt and the game continues for three complete runs (that is, the game ends when you click the button for the third time). The objective is to get the minimum average time.
Have fun, and remember if you pay for this game (only $15), you not only support the shareware concept and increase the likelihood we’ll update it or write other games, you will also receive an electronic copy of “Inside MindThump” detailing how the game works and tips for improving your play.
